Metric Day Celebration |

|
On Friday night, October 10, a widely diversified group of 200 people
comprised of middle school students from the Powderhouse, East Somerville,
and A.D. Healey schools, their parents and teachers, student volunteers
from Somerville High School French Honor, Mathematics, and Computer Clubs,
the ESCS PTA, community volunteers, and members of The Somerville Mathematics
Fund gathered at the Powderhouse Community School to celebrate Metric Day.
|
It was an evening of fun-filled activities celebrating
the power
of 10. (Full List of Events)
Estimations and mental calculations of the sizes of various pieces of
sports equipment, the sizes of the foot prints of Joan Benoit Samuelson
and Bill Rodgers,
and the length of Shaqs size 22 shoe were made. Students competed in
the events of the Metric Olympics: one-handed sponge squeeze, one-handed marble
grab,
standing broad step, cotton ball shotput, straw javelin throw, and paper plate
discus throw. Metric songs composed by Mary McClellan and Colleen Murphy were
sung, Metric mania quizzes were taken, student-made Metric pennants were displayed,
and metric math buttons were made.

Everyone worked on problem solving, estimating, measuring, and dined
on hotdogs, chips, and juice. Prizes of books, autographed shoes from
Joan Benoit Samuelson and Bill Rodgers, pictures and various team paraphernalia
from the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins, and strings of bowling
from Saccos Bowl Haven were awarded at the end of a very exciting
mathematical evening. See some of our winners.

Many businesses helped to make this evening possible. Prizes were
donated by Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, the Red Sox, the Patriots,
the
Celtics, the Bruins, Saccos Bowl Haven, and Ersin Dur. Sports equipment
was loaned by the Somerville High School Athletic Department, and Shaqs
shoe was loaned by Davids Shoe Store of Cambridge. Food was obtained
through the generosity of McKinnons Market, Costco, Shaws/Star
Market (Beacon Street), Shaws/Star Market (Broadway), and others.

The Somerville Mathematics Fund is honored to have been able to sponsor
and participate in the celebratory events of this evening. We want to publicly
thank all of the many individuals and businesses whose contributions of
effort, time and goods made the evening possible.
