"Scrappy high schoolers win competition"

Somerville High School students put a little junk in their trunks at the third annual Scrapheap Showdown at Tufts on Oct. 21. Coming in with no idea of the challenge, nine teams had less than three hours to learn about and build windmills from a pile of donated odds and ends, including plumbing pipes, spindles from a closed silk mill, and, of course, duct tape. The winning team barely edged out competitors by lifting 100 pennies in the shortest time. Teams had to raise at least $75 from sponsors; proceeds benefited the Somerville Mathematics Fund."
