Letter: They had pi and pizza

Thursday, March 27, 2003

On Friday night, March 14, 250 people comprised of middle school students from the East Somerville, A.D. Healey and Powder House schools, their parents and teachers, student volunteers from Somerville High School, the ESCS PTA, and members of The Somerville Mathematics Fund gathered at the East Somerville Community School to celebrate Pi Day. Many games were played, Pi was computed and recited, estimations and predictions were made, Pi songs were sung, Pi quizzes were taken, Pi posters and songs were displayed, and math buttons were made. Everyone worked on problem solving, estimating, predicting, and enjoying Pi and dined on pizza and juice. Prizes of pies, pi books, and candy were awarded at the end of a very exciting mathematical evening.

Many businesses helped to make this evening possible. Pizza was donated by J & J Pizza, Papa John's Pizza, Dominos Pizza, Leone's Pizza, Mama Lisa's Pizza, and Dial a Pizza. Over 325 pies were donated by Table Talk. Gift cards were donated by BJ's and Star Market (Beacon Street). Ace Wheelworks provided bicycle wheels. Market Basket provided a gift certificate.

The Somerville Mathematics Fund was honored to be able to sponsor this exciting event with the support and time of the many wonderful individuals in the Somerville schools and community as well as the generous donations from these businesses.

It was a pleasure for members of the Mathematics Fund to participate in the celebratory events of that evening. We want to publicly thank all of the people and businesses that made the evening possible.
